Heavy rain and snow that could snarl morning travel in parts of the Eastern United States on Wednesday were expected to end by the afternoon and give way to a placid Thanksgiving for much of the nation, forecasters said. A storm that began late Monday and continued overnight Tuesday was expected to leave up to three inches of rain in some areas from the Gulf Coast through the Mid-Atlantic and into the Northeast. Snowfall of up to six inches was possible in parts of New Hampshire and northern Maine, according to the National Weather Service, which would create what the forecasters called a “white Thanksgiving.”

More than 2,500 flights into or out of U.S. airports were delayed as of late Sunday morning during the post-Thanksgiving travel rush as severe weather, including rain, heavy winds and snow, swept through major cities. “We’ve seen that areas with lower moose density tend to have healthier moose with fewer ticks,” said state Moose Biologist Lee Kantar, who is running the study. Maine's moose population is currently the largest of all the lower 48 states at over 60,000 animals, according to state figures, thanks to an ideal habitat and careful management of the annual moose hunt. Kantar is now leading research to test whether thinning the moose population through increased hunting can help.
